West Portal

“West Portal is a neighborhood lost in time. Originally developed as a suburb of San Francisco’s downtown, West Portal’s building boom began in the 1920s with the opening of the trolley tunnel under Twin Peaks. Residential housing along the hilly, wooded streets is made up predominately of single-family detached homes with small yards.  The shopping district is compact and comprised mainly of Mom and Pop stores, neighborhood taverns, and family-style restaurants sporting irony-free Formica countertops. There’s family-friendly 50s feel to the neighborhood, long a favorite with San Francisco’s firefighters, police, and teachers, as well as the owners of those Mom and Pop operations.

Many of these businesses have operated in West Portal for generations, and consequently the neighborhood has a stable feel. Eezy Freezy Market and the Empire Theater have been doing business for decades. And newcomers like Ambassador Toys, with their handpicked selection of toys from around the world, and Cafe For All Seasons, do a great job of fitting into the street scene.  Catching a MUNI Metro from West Portal is never a problem.
